One of my improv group’s favorite places to go after rehearsal is out for bubble tea or Froyo (Frozen yogurt). The U District has plenty of options to satisfy both needs but we always seem to find ourselves back at one place: Yunnie Bubble Tea. Maybe it’s the décor, maybe it’s the location or maybe it’s because it is amazing. Last week, it was because Yunnie’s recently remodeled.
My friends did not expect the remodel. In fact, we walked in from muscle memory without even noticing it. Personally, I thought we had gone to a different bubble tea place that had somehow managed to squeeze right next to Yunnie’s. Nope. They remodeled. New decade, new colors. I really like it. It appears more professional, gives them a nice central space to make the froyo, bubble tea and milkshakes while still retaining the same amount of seating if not more.
Per usual, I had the toughest time choosing what I even wanted, especially with Yunnie’s large selection and fabulous customization options. Once I decide my drink, I have to decide my flavor, which there are so many to choose from. And wait… am I sure I don’t want frozen yogurt? For someone as indecisive as me, this is a huge ordeal. On this particular visit, I was attempting to get over a cold and rebuild from my voice from a ridiculous improv session. So, I had to stay away from the thick milkshake-like bubble tea drinks and ordered a tasty almond milk tea with boba.
It took a bit longer for me to get my drink but I was satisfied with it, as I sat with the rest of the group and we stayed way too long. Yunnie’s accommodates people like us nicely and it is almost expected, it seems. One thing I have difficulty accommodating is all of the boba, the tapioca balls in my drink. At first, I welcome them, enjoying them as a chewy textured ball that randomly popped in my mouth. But after a while, I fill up on the drink and I cannot take another boba. I actually do not remember a time where I have finished all my boba and honestly, I have tried. Meanwhile, fellow improv member, Andy, had downed his boba first before the rest of the drink but he is an experienced bubble tea drinker. He’s my go-to bubble tea guru.
As the night went on and the improv group continued to crack jokes, my voice slowly morphed into a squeak. It was so bad that I’m pretty sure the employees felt awful for me when I asked for water, which they kindly upgraded to hot water. Thanks Yunnie’s.
Long story short: The milk tea was delicious, I appreciate the water upgrade, I’m still trying to get used to the boba but Yunnie’s will be my go-to choice for bubble tea. Oh and I love the remodel. If you get a chance, you should check it out too.
Quick note: I do not know a lot about bubble tea. I tried bobas when I was fourteen and didn’t like them so I stayed away from them. As a UW student, I feel like I must graduate loving bubble tea so I’ve started to slowly bring it back so I can acquire a taste for it. You may notice that I don’t call drinks by the right name. Readers – please, if you know the proper bubble tea names, comment so I can know too.
