The Violet Hour is thought to be one of those “urban legends.” The pre-Prohibition Era inspired speakeasy is hard to locate. Yet, my girlfriends and I were determined to discover the Violet Hour and see what all the hype was about.
We knew the Violet Hour was located somewhere in Wicker Park, just not exactly sure. After walking for twenty minutes, basically in circles, we came across an unmarked wooden panel door. Uneasy feelings consumed our bodies as we opened the door. However, once we walked in, we realized we found it!
Waiting to be seated, one notices the ballroom like décor. Chandeliers, velvet drapes, and dark blue leather couches pervade the room. Candles are the main source of light fulfilling the Violet Hour with a true sensation of a members only club.
The drink menu offered a variety of old school classics. With each drink averaging $12.00, it was hard to make a decision. I ended up ordering a Blackberry Capirissima, which was prepared with four-year-old Flor de Cana rum, lime, Demerara syrup, and blackberries.
Sitting back and enjoying the company of my girlfriends, the high-class décor and the luscious drink I realized why the Violet Hour stands on such a high pedestal.
I highly recommend going on an endeavor to find the Violet Hour… once one finds it, there will be no disappointment.
