Having spent lots of time in Minneapolis at the U of M makes your taste buds go numb.
Sure there are some local greats like Mesa Pizza or Al's Breakfast in Dinkytown - but being a true Chicagoan means knowing when $7.25 for a small pizza at a certain chain store on campus just doesn't cut it. You want authentic taste? Get out the chain stores, and take a trip to Chicago and bus it down to Little Italy, Taylor and South Racine in Chicago.
Growing up in Chicago, I was too short to see behind the counter where the burgers are chair-broiled right in front of you - but I sure remember the smell, and the nose knows no lies. Flame broiled beef patties served beneath fresh cut vegetables, a crispy bun and (deliciously greasy) fries brought me back to childhood memories. Neighborhood super-soaker fights, watching the fireworks on lake shore drive during the 4th, and getting Italian Ice on those hot summer nights. Best of all, getting a busy burger next to Sheridan Park.
And the place has upgraded since I moved away back in '97 too. So bring a friend, get some Chicago Style Dogs or a burger, pull up some chairs, and enjoy that flame broiled taste, the view of little Italy and the extra bucks you saved yourself.
You won't find that delicious tasting of a burger anywhere else without having to make a reservation and then tipping for one.
