Luby's Liftoff
Tagged Places:  Luby's

Luby's has been an institution in Texas for years. Nonetheless, growing up I found it to be a land of old people with bland food and a bland atmosphere. However, the Pappas empire (owner of Pappisitos, Pappas Burgers, etc.) added Luby's to it's realm a few years ago. I recently lunched at the Galleria Luby's for the first time since this occured. I was happy I did.

Luby's has improved itself without losing its homespun qualities that made it unique. It still has the famous LuAnn platter, with an entree (of which I chose the salmon croquette), 2 sides, and bread. I ordered the cabbage, rice pilaf, and garlic bread as my sides. This totaled $8, which I considered a good value.

What impressed me most about the 'new Luby's' was the variety. There are at least a dozen entree options, ranging from fried chicken to ribeye steak. The cafeteria line moves quickly. The service is good and the environment is more varied then I remembered. Luby's has lifted itself in recent times to a good casual restaurant.
