My friend Kellie just got hired promoting for DoubleLion so now I get to know when all the cool reggae shows are in sactown! It was a super rainy day last Thursday but we still trekked out and made it to sac. I liked the actual venue because it was REALLY intimate. Parking was free- but they don't have valet and you have to find street parking. We found parking about two blocks away from the venue. The lighting was excellent inside Harlow's and it really set the mood. The security at Harlow's is pretty anal though... I've never been to a reggae concert where they wouldn't let the crowd smoke. I actually saw a security guy push his way through the crowd so he could confiscate what looked like to be a joint and put it out on his hand. It was the most intimidating and bad-ass thing I've ever seen! The bartenders were friendly and the drinks were REALLY REALLY strong. I ordered two redbull vodkas for Rachael and I (around $5 each) and we had to actually go back and ask them to put more redbull in it! I swear the drink was 3/4 vodka which was strange especially compared to Davis bars. MIDNITE finally came on around midnight and he definatly didn't disappoint. I think he was a lot better when I saw him at Reggae Muffin Festival two years ago - but for a small venue it was a pretty cool show. He definitely puts you in a kind of trance with his music. The highlight of my night was when this really old hippie dude came out of no where and cleared out the dance floor. He was pretending to swim/dance and kept throwing his hands up EVERYWHERE. It was hilarious and highly entertaining. Decent venue, really intimate. I recommend this place only if there's a good performer playing - there really isn't much to do at Harlow's except watch and rock out to a performance.
