Why should Jason and Molly get married on TV? Thoughts from a former reality tv contestant...

A few months ago, Jason and Molly gave us the good news that they were engaged. We first heard the news at Canlis restaurant in Seattle. It was the perfect place to celebrate their engagement. Little did we know that it was going to be televised in front of potentially 20 million viewers! Now, that's pressure to get in shape and look good!

Over the past 12 months, I've gotten the chance to know Jason pretty well.....whether it's watching football games, grabbing drinks, family dinners, play dates with the kids at Chuck E Cheese, etc. And my wife has gotten to know Molly pretty well also. But here's what bothers me. Whenever the conversation comes up about J&M getting married on television, I find it interesting to hear so much negativity and criticism about the whole thing. I've heard so many people judge, question, and ask why someone would go on a reality television show.....for love....or in this case....for marriage.

So I can’t help, but write this blog. I want to explore the misconceptions of generalizing “why people go on tv.” Trust me, I've heard the all the negative punches about why people go on reality tv....."fame whore", "ego", "looking to do playboy", "selling your soul" and many more. And what's interesting is that most of these comments come from people who have never been on television.

So, let me try to give the naysayers and bystanders another perspective. I was on Donald Trump's "The Apprentice"and I personally experienced the whole process of dealing with negativity even though I was finalist on the show. Granted, my show was a business show.....but nevertheless, there were still so many haters. The reason I mention this is to validate my opinion on what it means to go through the process of going from a "regular person" to a "regular person on television." So, why is this important?

In life, I realize that most ignorant and simple stereotypes come from not being educated or informed. What’s interesting is that most haters don't have a clue what it means to go on television. In fact, many don’t even know a person who’s been on television at a personal level. But, they find it so easy to make quick judgments.

Let me pose a question. Would you criticize someone for having a different passion or hobby than you? Of course not, right? For example, I don't skydive.......it’s too dangerous for me….and I have a fear of heights. However, I don't criticize people who skydive. In fact, I might even look up to them for having the guts to do something I can't do.

Here's another way of looking at it.....television is a hobby. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to say "I've done it" and tell the stories to your children and children's children. It's a memory that can be enjoyed. Sure, everything has it's risks. Some people have torpedoed after being on television.....whether they ruined their reputation on television or just "lost it" in the whirlwind of fame. In the same manner, there are risks with sky diving too.....well, you can die if things go wrong. I'm not saying it happens all the time, but I'm trying to explain the inherent risk/reward situation that we face on a daily basis.

People ask me all the time, "why did you go on the Apprentice?" Honestly, I'm pretty sick of this question, but it tells me what they are thinking….especially when they give “that look”…..(Jason, you know what I’m talking about.) Let me answer it by posing another question...."why do people skydive or shark hunt or surf big waves?" It's for the thrill, passion, and dynamic living. I live my life vicariously, and I don’t want to end up at age 60 and say “what if” or “I wish I would have tried…” Live with no regrets is my motto.

Sure, there are some people who pursue television only to become a star....or famous. But you know what, so what? That's their passion to become a star. Why criticize?

As for me, I went on The Apprentice as a fun move for a good dinner story. I was at Bellevue square mall in shorts and a t-shirt, and I saw the casting line for the Apprentice while I was shopping with my wife. She said, "why don't you try out.....it might be fun." I thought it would make a good dinner story. And you know what, that's how I live my life. I enjoy doing things “on the fly” and making memories out of them. When the Apprentice was airing, my whole family and close friends would gather each week and we had the best moments watching these episodes. It was so funny to hear by daughter imitate funny things that Donald Trump said.

In the same manner, Jason and Molly have the opportunity to have the most beautiful wedding on television. Can you blame a woman for wanting a beautiful million dollar wedding? So, maybe you are more private than them....but it doesn't mean you are right and they are wrong or vice versa. It simply means we all have preferences. Look at your Facebook preferences....I'm sure we'll all see different combos. So, come on. No more hate about them getting married on television. They can enjoy this time and have fun with it. And you know what, if ABC offered my wife and I a great televised wedding.....knowing our nature….we’d say "yeah, that would be fun!" We all have different things that make us tick. Reality people are not all fame whores. They are just REGULAR PEOPLE who enjoy the experience. Note I capitalized REGULAR PEOPLE. Not all of us think we are celebrities or famous. We are just enjoying our 15 minutes so we can use them as memories to talk, reflect, and laugh about.

Jason and Molly happen to be very good people who are rooted, humble, and fun. Despite all the criticism they endured, they can now say “shove it” to all the naysayers and enjoy life for themselves. Congrats Jason and Molly. I’ll see you guys at the wedding in LA!
