Last Saturday, my roommates and I decided to go out for a pre-valentines day dinner. While searching for various BYOB restaurants, the Galapagos Café seemed the most interesting.
Not only does the Galapagos Café categorize itself as an Ecuadorian restaurant, but also Asian fusion. One side of the menu is strictly Latin food, while the other offers a variety of sushi options. Sure it sounds as though the Galapagos Café is having some sort of identity crises, yet for some reason the combination works.
As soon as my roommates and I were seated, we were graced with the most delicious plantain chips. It was the perfect pre-appetizer dish to munch on since we were downing our wine (no corkage fee) at a pretty rapid pace.
Once our vegetable tempura appetizer came to the table we started to notice the eclectic decorations that were displayed in the tiny restaurant. Random fish tanks, fish mounted on the walls, and maps of various countries was just some of the odd décor that filled the room. Yet, it was incredible amusing and suited the restaurant.
My main dish consisted of: Bistec De Cordero, stewed lamb and came with my choice of rice. Since I am a college student, lamb is a rarity when it comes to my diet. However, that was the best lamb I have had in a long time! If it was possible for me to have it everyday, and my budget was not a problem, I would!
Overall, the Galapagos Café is a GREAT restaurant and if one is in the Irving Park area... definitely check it out.
