Get cozy with friends and family and enjoy an Italian feast at this loved-by-locals restaurant.
October 05, 2008

In Short
Homesick for your mother's Italian cooking? Grab your appetite and head to this restaurant, where the friendly wait staff will serve up portions of Colosseum-esque proportions, like spaghetti and meatballs loaded with savory tomato sauce and lots of pungent garlic. Dishes center on Southern Italian immigrant fare, and are meant to be shared family-style with a large goblet of wine-to enhance the taste, of course. The ornate décor with walls covered in vintage photos evokes a warm homey feel that welcomes customers to dine among the other families and loyal customers. Buon Appetito!

It's an interesting experience. The decor and vibe specifically. If you've never been you should try. Their food is not bad, but not the best either. Pricing is acceptable, but nothing to brag about. Should try it at least once.

Good service, Decent food (depends on your order)and big portions. The quality is good, but the portions are better. A larger order can feed two to three easily.

I will never understand why people knock Olive Garden, but then go here. Olive Garden is better! The alfredo sauce here is bland. The lemon caper sauce isn't as good as the extremely simple lemon caper sauce I make at home. The prosciutto is flavorless. The meatballs are spongy. The tomato sauce is watery. Sure, portions are large, but who cares if it's bad? I'd rather have smaller portions of good food, than large portions of bad food. Do yourself a favor, make spaghetti at home with tomato paste, canned tomatoes and fresh basil and you'll enjoy your food more.

Also, service was bad. Forgot one of my children's order and took forever to get watiers attention to remedy the situation.

Also, for nursing moms, the table height is at just the right height to make nursing difficult, however, wine menu on table makes a good privacy shield.

Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: Food isn't good

A great comfortable restaurant, an optical illusion when you first walk in because the area is small, but then they show you in, it opens up and it's just very Italian and you feel like part of the family, even if you're not Italian.

Food was terrific all around, from the bread to the incredible meatball and spaghetti.

Very well done, staff was courteous, and easily the best Italian restaurant I've been in while living in California.
If you go for dinner, I recommend having something very light for lunch so you'll have enough room to finish your meal.

Pros: Easily the Best Italian Restaurant on the West Coast
Cons: Figuring out parking as a first time visitor

Palo Alto Buca needs a NEW Manager

I had planned an 80th B'day celebration for my mother with 22 people. My fax'd information was not confirmed, no one called me to confirm my reservations or to discuss the banquet. I had to call two days before. The night of the celebration it was storming and I was told ALL 22 people had to arrive before seating us outside. Then, we had to wait over 15 mins. before having the tables set up. Once taken to the area WE WERE CRAMMED in and had to pratically climb over each other to sit down and get up. I complained to the Manager who told me he has never had a problem seating 22 people in such a manner and said 8 people should be able to sit in ONE booth. Yeah, if they were all 5 yr olds at the weight of 35 lbs! This Palo Alto Manager needs to be fired. Over $900 spent crammed and PO'd. NEVER AGAIN.

Pros: If you get a good Server who accommodates
Cons: parking, Restaurant Mgr, seating

Where To Sit:

If you have a large party, reserve the circular "Pope's Table." Special occasion? Request the kitchen table, where diner's can watch all the behind-the-scenes restaurant action.
