Where does the Community Center at Mercer View get all its energy?
Like to dance? Choose from flamenco, belly dancing, ballroom, folk, tap or Western styles.
Art classes, maybe? You can select calligraphy, cartooning, ceramics, drawing, watercolor painting, Japanese flower-arranging, still-life or live-model painting.
If photography's your thing, check out the center's variety of courses. How about one in hand-tinting?
If music appeals to you, consider classes on guitar or piano techniques.
The center also offers dog-obedience training, financial-planning sessions, computer seminars, master gardening classes and foreign language courses, including Cantonese or French.
Sports enthusiasts can play drop-in basketball and volleyball, or join the softball or volleyball league. There's also boccie ball, karate, kendo (Japanese fencing), badminton and tennis. Jazzercise supplements various aerobics and weight-training classes. Enjoy day-trip activities, including snowshoeing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and bird-watching. Offerings vary every quarter.
And if all these options overwhelm you to the point of inaction, there's something just for you: an anti-procrastination class.
The center rents 12 rooms, ranging from small meeting rooms that hold about 15 people, to the gymnasium, which can handle 300. Two rooms have hardwood floors with a mirrored wall, and the rest (except for the gym) are carpeted.
Seven rooms feature a lake view, and some have sinks. You can also reserve a large commercial kitchen next to the gym or a smaller kitchen adjoining the cafe. The center provides audio-visual equipment and room setup at no additional charge, and permits alcohol.
