Comfortable Rogers Park storefront offers mild island fare, soothing atmosphere and friendly service.
July 28, 2004

In Short
A cool blue mural of uninterrupted clouds and ocean covers the walls of this modestly upscale neighborhood restaurant, whose white tablecloths and cordial, smiling service are a pleasant contrast with Howard Street's otherwise gritty scene. The menu offers generous plates of Caribbean favorites like conch fritters, oxtail, and curried goat, plus sides of fried plantains, collard greens and sweet potato fries. Jerk chicken fans will find this version surprisingly mellow--liven it up with some Tabasco sauce (there's a bottle on every table).

Not worth it

This place was way too expensive for the meager, burnt portions they serve. I paid $44 for 2 entrees that consisted of two very small jerk chicken quarters & 4 small and fatty ox tails, and decent-sized coconut shrimp. The food arrived cold. The beans/rice was very dry. Our water glasses were not refreshed. There was no 'jerk' in the jerk chicken...very mild, dry, little flavor. The only good thing was the festival bread. When the chef asked us if we liked the food, we gave him our honest opinion. He rolled his eyes and walked off. We definitely will not be returning.

Save Money:

On Saturdays from 10am to 12pm, enjoy a multi-course Jamaican country breakfast for $6.95; on Sundays from 10am to 3pm, there's an extensive brunch spread for $12.95.

Parking:

There's generally plenty of room in front of the restaurant, but there are also a couple dozen spots behind the building (enter through the alley east of the entrance).

What to Drink:

Quench your thirst with Ting, a Jamaican grapefruit soda, or try sorrel with pineapple juice, another popular island beverage.
