The company that publishes "all the news that's fit to print."
August 17, 2003

History
Launched in 1851 by a group of bankers from Albany, the New York Times was a little-known paper until it became recognized for its comprehensive reporting, especially during the Civil War.

In 1897, Times owner Adolph Ochs sponsored a contest for the paper's slogan, but ended up choosing his own: "All the News That's Fit to Print."

The paper moved in 1903 from its Park Row location to Long Acre Square, which was eventually renamed Times Square in recognition of the Gray Lady's growing stature. The paper relocated again, still within the Times Square area, to its current location in the 1920s.
