A multi-leveled homage to the '40s and '50s.
August 17, 2003
(4.0 / 5 stars)
The Scene
"Too good for Oakland!" and "This must be a chain!" were the types of comments heard while waiting for a seat shortly after Joe Mama's opened. While some may believe the former, the latter is decidedly not true. What gives Joe Mama's the feeling that it's part of a chain is the amazing amount of thought that went into the design and execution of this classic Italian-American restaurant and lounge.
The Food
Huge appetizers like crispy jumbo red onion rings and zucchini circles are fried to perfection, with just the right amount of grease left to send the tongue into orbit. The salads are unbelievably large, although they're listed as being modest; exactly the kind of false advertising we need more of. Aside from the usual pasta dishes, the menu also offers up pizzas, sandwiches, steaks, chicken and seafood, along with traditional and tasty sides such as buttered asparagus and wilted spinach.

Joe Mama's has great food and great service. Homemade soups are great. I love their wraps. Unstuffy, casual, 50s decor. One of my favorite Oakland lunch spots.

Joe Mama's is Amazing!

I'm not a yuppie that goes to fancy schmancy restaurants, but I know good food when I taste it, even if it doesn't cost $50 a plate. The atmosphere of the joint is very pleasing, especially when ol' blue eyes is playing in the background (they also play oldies and a mix of other genres). Decor makes you feel your back in the 50's, where I long to be. The food is outta this world...my favorites are the spinach and artichoke dip, wedding soup, house salad(the best salad on earth), and any of their main dishes. Portions are plentiful and sooo filling, I usually have to take it home with me. If I can take a full blooded Italian there who hates eating any Italian food but his own and he can't stop talking about the place....then you know they are outstanding! Definetly my favorite place to eat in Pittsburgh...salute!
Pros:
mouthwatering, awesome decor, always satisfied
Cons:
street parking

I suggest going to a -real- Italian restaurant. Food at Joe Mamma's isn't that great (and is a horrible value unless you go for the half-price special). Atmosphere is very corny and fake. This place looks inside as if its owner(s) paid to have marketing specialists come in and create the decor -- which is so contrived it looks ridiculous. Noises from bar area (loud talking, laughing, and television sounds) often fill the main room of the restaurant.

Great Food and atmosphere

(5.0 / 5 stars)
My sister worked there and I went to try it for her. They had some of the best Italian food I have had in the states. I live in Italy so it is hard to find good Italian food. Those saying this place is bad can stick with Olive Garden because this is what authentic Italian should taste like. You all need to work on the pizza to make it more authentic though then it would be the best ever!!!!
Pros:
Inexpensive, Great service, Great food
Cons:
Pizza

I have been to Joe Mama's several times and the food was always very good, with the exception of the pizza (which I don't recommend). The atmosphere is very cozy and the service was friendly and prompt.

I went to Oakland for a meeting. We stopped at Joe Mama's first to meet up. I loved the atmosphere. It was homey and made me feel like I was in Old New York. The food was excellent. I can't wait to come back to Oakland. I recommend it to everyone. Keep up the good work.
