A charming house of New World cuisine lures Naperville foodies for intimate, upscale dining.
May 09, 2004
(3.5 / 5 stars)

The Scene
Once a quaint house (one of the oldest in town), this inviting space is divided into multiple rooms with an intimate feel. The decor is done in tasteful neutrals and earth tones, with mod bistro chairs and white tablecloths befitting the whimsically refined food.

The Food
The playful New World cuisine concept results in menu items like a Mexican-style sope: a crisp bowl made of fried shrimp and scallop mousse with a colorful, crunchy filling of seafood, root vegetables and celery puree. Tender, slow-seared duck breast patty is bound with a smoky chocolate mole and served with zesty tomatillo orange-mint salsa. A juicy hunk of seared wahoo arrives with a worldly entourage of bamboo risotto, sherried cucumbers and Creole butter. For dessert, try the traditional pastel tres leches, cake soaked in three types of milk.

Living way out in the far western burbs, it isn't often that I get excited about more local restaurants. Naperville usually has some good ones. This one may be my favorite there! Had a wonderful dinner last night and highly recommend the entrees we had--venison chops, roasted chicken and halibut w/lobster sauce. Not even one small disappointment, and my standards are pretty high. Congrats to the 10 West chef--well done!! The dining room is very comfortable, in a somewhat minimalist way. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We arrived early, around 6pm, and the place never got close to being filled. Not sure how they stay in biz, but it was EXCELLENT!

Not your typical yuppie hub

I thought this place would be a total turn off because of its location in uppity Naperville. But what I didn't count on was the staff being so friendly to a 1st-timer. If there is something you don't understand on the menu, they staff (and even the chef) is there to help ya out. If I had the money, I'd definitely go back.

Pros: Good Parking, Great Desserts, Friendly Staff
Cons: , trendy crowd

Save Money:

The chef's tasting menu is a bargain, with four courses at $50 per person, $75 with wine.

Parking:

There are free municipal lots a half block east on Chicago Avenue, and three blocks north off of Washington.

What to Drink:

The wine list is moderately priced, with many selections in the $20s and $30s; the reserve list of about two dozen offerings runs $85-$300. Some half bottles are offered.
