Celtic brews and tunes draw a mix-and-match crowd to this popular watering hole.
August 14, 2003
(3.5 / 5 stars)

The Scene
Lincoln Parkers in comfy attire sit alongside DePaul's less adventuresome types, resulting in a neighborhood-meets-college-dorm appeal. Typical accoutrements (think beer-touting mirrors) grace the walls of this angular spot, which is known to draw a particularly young and boisterous crowd--even on weekdays.

The Draw
Irish atmosphere and beer for the anti-martini set. Black and tans are cranked at light speed for local revelers, while DePaul transplants are known to up the ante with Irish car bombs and Red Bull-Jager shots. Plenty of the standards--including Guinness, Harp and Bass--are on hand, tapped and bottled along with domestics. Or opt for a Jameson's; you'll have plenty of company. Tunes, as you might expect, include requisite U2 with accents of Buffett and Diamond. Occasional live bands, both rookie and Irish pro, pack the house--but that doesn't take much at this smallish spot.

I love this bar! Great drinks, staff and even live music on the weekends. Reasonably priced and hoppin on the weekends!

Pros: great place
Cons: gets a little crowded on the weekends

Hole in the Wall Irish Bar

Hole in the wall, no kitchen (they let you order in or bring food in), but I recommend going on a Saturday night when they have this older Irish man playing guitar and singing classic Irish songs and making fun of patrons.

Of all the bars I've visited since moving to Chicago last year, Irish Eyes is by far my favorite! It's not pretentious or trendy...just a bunch of people drinking beer and having a good time. Yeah, it's crowded sometimes, but the bartenders are cool and Whitey O'Day and Jerry O'Connell put on a good show on the weekends. You can't go wrong with dirty limericks!!

Parkway?...naw

I can't say enough about a bar which openly honors the draft mugs of a rival Lincoln Park bar and is proud of it. Go on mondays, but stop by Parkway on Fullerton first and buy a mug for the $.50 drafts that makes this place so great. The music is great, the bartenders are too and so are the friendly door staff, who will get to know you by name, overall one of my favorites.

Pros: Good Drink Specials, Attractive Bartenders, Friendly Bouncers
Cons: Gets PACKED!, Not Enough Tables, Small Bathroom

Beer-Bang for Your Buck:

If you're penny-pinched, be sure to stop by on Monday nights for $1domestic drafts.
